Blender is a 3D modelling software that is free to use for ,animating films, art and creating 3D models. Its is cross platform, however it may be slow and difficult to use on low spec PCs, meaning it is idea for personal small scale projects but isn’t really used as industry standard software.
There is also a large community using blender so there is a wide range of online tutorials that are free to access and also of a really good standard, for more in depth instructions on how to use the software there are online courses available . So even though the software may be difficult to use for beginners, it is easy to learn the basics from someone else or find inspiration.
pros-
free, massive online community, not much limit to creativity
cons-
better alternatives available, slow on low spec PCs, difficult for beginners
autodesk maya
pros-
excepted as the best software for 3D animation, and incredible for motion capture handling, this is often why it is first choice in the film industry .It also has a free form approach to 3D modeling, eliminating any restrictions of creativity. may is also 20 years old, allowing time for the software to evolve and develop
cons-
Including the learning curve of any 3D modeling software, maya takes time and practice to be able to understand and use effectively. It should not be considered a beginner level software. Also due to the price tag, someone just starting out on 3D modeling would be hesitant on a £1,470/year subscription.
